Hsiao Yi-Mei
Hsiao Yi-Mei (b. 1991, Taiwan) holds a master’s degree from the National Taipei University of Education.
Her oil paintings center around the human figure, using her own body as both subject and narrative vessel to investigate themes of identity, gender representation, and societal perception. Treating the self as a site of experimentation, she delves into the intricate relationships between the individual and the collective, the real and the imagined. Working primarily in a realist style, Hsiao often incorporates negative film effects to explore the fusion of the human body with various foreign elements. Contemporary and playful references are woven into her compositions, offering a visual response to the socio-temporal landscape and reflecting the spirit of our times. Drawing from fragments of memory, she reconstructs and reinterprets objects to translate emotional experiences and project inner states, creating deeply personal and psychological visual narratives.
Since 2013, Hsiao’s works have been exhibited widely and recognized with numerous accolades, including an Honorable Mention at the 2020 Art Festival Bank of Taiwan and selection for the 2024 NATIONAL ARTS AWARDS. Her works are part of several private and public collections, including the Bank of Taiwan and DA YONG Construction.
