Franklin Collao

Born in 1982 in Tijuana, Mexico. He is a contemporary artist living and working between Lago di Como, Italy, and Mexico City. Known for his vibrant oil paintings and mastery of color, Collao employs a unique sfumatura technique, softening the paint until it mimics a digital-like surface. His explore themes of borders and fluidity, especially after his iconic 2009 mural Penétrame on the Mexico–United States border wall, which remains a powerful symbol. Collao’s Wearable Paintings concept, presented at the 2021 International Pictorial Triennial, challenged the static nature of traditional painting by allowing the artwork to move with the viewer. His Soft Edge Paintings eliminate the boundaries of his compositions, expanding light and color across the canvas.

Collao’s latest works in Flux Forma blur the lines between truth and illusion, offering a queer vision of a dynamic future. His works have been exhibited globally in institutions like the Museo del Palacio de Bellas Artes and the San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art, with solo shows at Cardi Gallery and a feature in art books and publications such as Artsy.com and Domus Magazine.
