WU I-CHIEN
Wu I -Chien was born in Changhua in 1968. After graduating from the National Taiwan Normal University Department of Fine Arts, Wu traveled to the US and gained her master’s degree from the Pratt Institute.
Wu worked at Chung T'ien Television and Ming Chuan University Department of Commercial Design and currently works as an artist full time. Wu’s works reflect her profound observations of social phenomena and environmental issues and have been deeply inspirational for viewers. Wu has been invited to show her works at the Museum of Contemporary Art Taipei, National Taiwan Normal University Art Museum, as well as contemporary art institutions in France and Korea.
Wu has always explored the boundaries between abstract and figurative art. The fundamental element of paintings, the line, is stretched to the extreme as the lens zooms out, allowing us to see the figurative design, transforming into objects we are familiar with. The Book series, which the artist has worked on for the past three years, depicts books that are deliberately enlarged, while the handling method of the image diminishes the meaning of books and instead allows the vision to focus on the linear structures presented on the sides of books. By incorporating compression and distortion methods, the works allude to the phenomenon of our times where false information is being circulated.
