CHIU CHIEN-JEN
Chiu Chien-Jen was born in Pingtung in 1981 and graduated from the Taipei National University of the Arts School of Fine Arts Department of Fine Arts in 2009.
Chiu’s works attracted attention early on and are renowned for their creative energy and singular artistic style. The artist received first prize at the 2004 Taipei Art Awards at the age of 23 and was invited to hold a solo exhibition at the Taipei Fine Arts Museum in 2007. Chiu when on to exhibit works both domestic and abroad, such as in Paris, Shanghai, Japan, and Singapore, and has received worldwide recognition. Chiu’s works are among the collections of institutions including the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, Taipei Fine Arts Museum, and Société Générale.
His works are often inspired by daily life and are created by moving or expanding random images to construct sceneries that are at the same time lifelike and unreal. As for the composition, Chiu uses extensive low-saturated oil painting to create traces of passing time, while the repeated layering and removal of pigment compresses the moment onto the painting, creating an effect where the seemingly backlit, fragmented silhouettes give a sense of alienation and uncertainty. The compressed spaces are metaphors for the wandering souls in this image-flooded society, presenting the afterimages of the highlights of life. The works show a strong sense of contemporality and the younger generations’ fast-paced, careless, and unique mindsets, as well as the urban scene. The works investigate how images impact the younger generations and remind viewers of intimate life experiences.
